Despite fan desires, it seems a solo Hulk movie is not on the horizon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Mark Ruffalo recently revealed that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has no plans for another standalone film centered on the green giant.
Ruffalo shared details of a conversation with Feige during an appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. When Ruffalo asked about the possibility of a standalone Hulk movie, Feige responded that Marvel would instead develop the character over multiple films.
“He said, ‘What would you like to do?’ He said, ‘What would you do if you had a standalone Hulk movie?’ And I said, ‘Well, I’d like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character.’ And he said, ‘Okay, we’ll do that throughout four movies. We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk, let’s just get that – I don’t mean to burst your bubble… but that’s not happening. So, we’ll do it over four movies, how’s that sound?'” Ruffalo explained.
The last standalone Hulk movie in the MCU was 2008’s The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton. Since then, Ruffalo has portrayed Bruce Banner/Hulk in various Avengers films and other projects. Ruffalo’s Hulk was last seen in the She-Hulk Disney+ series, which introduced his son Skaar.
While Hulk likely won’t receive his solo outing anytime soon, Ruffalo said the character will appear in the upcoming Captain America 4 film. Marvel Studios’ next release is Deadpool 3 this July, the only MCU movie slated for 2024 due to delays. The highly anticipated Deadpool threequel will feature Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine.
For now, Hulk fans will need to settle for appearances spread out across multiple Marvel films. But who knows, with Marvel’s tendency for surprise announcements, standalone plans could one day come to fruition. Either way, Ruffalo’s portrayal will continue evolving throughout Phase 5 and beyond.
