The January 2024 Steam Hardware Survey shows NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 40 series gaining ground, while AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 cards struggle for traction amongst Steam users.
Despite launching months ago, the only RDNA 3 GPU listed is AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX. Meanwhile, NVIDIA has several RTX 40 series cards climbing the charts, including the RTX 4070, 4070 Ti, 4060 Ti, and 4060. More than twice as many RTX 4080 GPUs are detected compared to the sole AMD entrant.
AMD‘s more affordable options like the RX 7800 XT, 7700 XT, and 7600 are still absent from the Steam rankings. With the 7800 XT and 7700 XT only being available for four months, their lack of penetration could improve over time.
On the NVIDIA side, new Ada Lovelace models are steadily growing past popular last-gen counterparts. The RTX 4070 has already shot past the RTX 3070 Ti, 3070, and other former favorites. January’s results showed slight gains for most RTX 40 entries.
For AMD, the aging Radeon RX 580 remains the most popular desktop GPU in the survey, followed by the RX 6700 XT. Integrated Radeon graphics saw the biggest gains, not dedicated cards.
NVIDIA still dominates, with the RTX 3060 as the #1 GPU overall. The new RTX 4060 Laptop GPU also cracked the top ten. With RTX 40 SUPER cards coming in 2024, NVIDIA’s Steam share could grow further.
While slow RDNA 3 adoption is concerning, AMD has the opportunity to turn this around in 2024. More availability of mid-range options should help improve Radeon’s Steam penetration going forward. But for now, Team Green maintains a strong lead in the Steam charts.
