Epic Games Store Hits 75 Million Monthly Active Users as Free Games Skyrocket
The Epic Games Store saw major growth in 2023, surpassing 75 million monthly active users in December. This represents a 10% increase over 2022.
Epic’s free game giveaways likely fueled this growth. Users claimed nearly 586 million free games last year, worth over $2 billion in total value. The average review score for these games was a solid 75%.
Now with over 270 million registered users, the storefront saw a 40 million user jump from 2022. However, spending on third-party games dropped 13% despite adding 1,300 new titles.
Fortnite and other Epic titles drove revenue, which grew 16% to exceed $950 million. Top third-party sellers included Dead Island 2 and AAA titles like FIFA and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Looking ahead, Epic plans major upgrades to the store app like a download manager, notifications, and social features. Support for subscriptions, iOS app, and pre-loading are also coming in 2024.
While third-party purchases slowed, free game giveaways continue fueling record Epic Games Store growth. By leveraging its Fortnite earnings, Epic attracts more users to its platform with freebies and exclusives.
